In May 2024, the KBS National Singing Contest was held in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, where I live. A junior from my music club back when I was in college also lives nearby, and he suggested that we should give it a try. So, we decided to participate in the contest as a male duet.
We’re both fathers raising sons, and we made time here and there to practice singing and harmonizing together. We prepared the song “Doll,” a ballad. We even coached our two sons to mimic the facial expression of MC Nam Hee-seok as a little performance trick.
A total of 338 teams participated. On the day of the preliminaries, we saw many contestants were great singers. Luckily, we passed the first round of preliminaries and made it into the top 44 teams for the second round. However, we didn’t make it to the final 15 teams for the main competition. Even so, we made some unforgettable memories.
If you plan to participate in the National Singing Contest, I recommend choosing an upbeat song that seniors in the audience will enjoy.
2024년 5월, 내가 살고 있는 서울 강동구에서 KBS 전국노래자랑이 열렸다. 대학 시절 음악 동아리 후배가 근처에 사는데, 그 후배가 한 번 도전해 보자고 제안했다. 그래서 우리는 남성 듀엣으로 전국노래자랑에 참가하기로 했다.
둘 다 아들을 키우는 아빠였기에 틈틈이 시간을 내서 함께 노래하고 화음 연습을 했다. 발라드 곡인 '인형'을 준비했다. 두 아들에게 개인기로 MC 남희석의 표정을 따라 해 보라고 연습시켰다.
총 338팀이 참가했고, 예선 날 노래 실력이 뛰어난 참가자가 많었다. 다행히 우리는 1차 예선을 통과해 2차 본선 44개 팀에 들었다. 하지만 아쉽게도 본선에 진출할 최종 15팀에는 들지 못했다. 그러나 잊지 못할 좋은 추억을 만들었다.
만일 전국노래자랑에 참가할 계획이 있다면 관객석의 어르신들이 즐길 수 있는 신나는 노래를 고를 것을 추천한다.

B: No, there were so many skilled contestants that I couldn’t get to the main stage.
A: That’s too bad.
B: I still made great memories while preparing. I’m satisfied with that.
