Recently, a battery pallet ejected from the International Space Station (ISS) crashed into a house in Florida, USA. The accident caused damage to the home’s roof and the second-story floor.
Space debris refers to man-made objects in space that are no longer in use. Hundreds of millions of fragments both large and small are currently orbiting Earth. They pose a threat not only to satellites to the ISS and astronauts. These fragments move at a speed of 8 kilometers per second, so even tiny pieces can cause severe damage.
Many countries around the world are working to address the issue of space debris. Technologies under research and development include robotic arms, powerful magnets, and nets. I hope we will be able to keep space clean, so that space exploration can be conducted more safely in the future.

최근 국제우주정거장(ISS)에서 배출한 배터리 팔레트가 미국 플로리다의 한 주택에 추락하는 사고가 있었다. 이 사고로 그 주택의 지붕과 2층 바닥이 손상되었다.
우주 쓰레기는 더 이상 사용되지 않는 우주에 있는 인공 물체를 말한다. 현재 수억 개의 크고 작은 파편이 지구 궤도를 떠돌고 있다. 우주 파편은 인공위성뿐만 아니라 ISS와 우주 비행사들을 위협하고 있다. 이러한 파편은 초당 8km의 속도로 움직이기 때문에 아주 작은 파편이라도 큰 피해를 입힐 수 있다.
전 세계 많은 국가에서 우주 쓰레기 문제를 해결하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 연구 개발 중인 기술로는 로봇 팔, 강력한 자석, 그물 등이 있다. 앞으로 우주를 깨끗하게 유지하여 우주 탐사가 더욱 안전하게 이루어질 수 있기를 바란다.
