Watching Soccer with My Son

My 10-year-old son is crazy about soccer. One day, we went to watch a soccer match at Suwon World Cup Stadium, which is right near our home.

I had no interest in soccer and didn’t know any of the players. But the moment I entered the stadium and heard the thunderous cheers, I instantly became a supporter of the home team.

Ever since that day, my son and I have really gotten into watching soccer matches and rooting for the team. My son and I now have a common interest, and we have lots to talk about. This has brought us closer together. Being able to share a hobby is truly a great blessing.

thunderous - extremely loud

really get into - become interested in something

root for - to support a sports team or a sports player and want it or them to win

demote - to lower someone or something in rank or position

  • We hadn’t met in years, so we had lots to talk about. / It was awkward because we didn’t have lots to talk about.
  • A difficult experience can bring people closer together. / The project brought us closer together.

A: What did you do over the weekend?

B: I went to watch a soccer match with my son.

A: Oh, really? How was it?

B: It was fun, but our team was demoted to the second division for the first time ever this year.

A: Oh no, I see.

B: Still, we’re rooting for the team. We’re hoping they’ll return to the first division soon.
