I saw some people flying kites while I was out on a walk. That inspired me to join a kite-flying club, and I started making my own kites. The bangpaeyeon, a shield-shaped kite with a hole in the middle, is a traditional Korean design unique to our country.
Making a kite turned out to be a challenging task. First, you cut and finely carve bamboo to create the frame pieces. Then, you cut a circular hole in the paper and glue the frames onto the paper. The final step is to tie the string, and the kite is complete.
The only way to tell whether the kite has been made properly is by flying it. Even seasoned experts can’t fly a kite without any wind. That’s why it’s essential to check wind forecasts and pick a day with the right conditions.

산책 나갔다가 연을 날리는 사람들을 봤다. 이를 계기로 연날리기 동호회에 가입하였고, 직접 연을 만들기 시작했다. 가운데 구멍이 뚫린 방패 모양의 연인 방패연은 우리나라 고유의 전통 디자인이다.
연을 만드는 것은 쉽지 않다. 먼저 대나무를 자르고 가늘게 깎아 연살(뼈대)을 만든다. 그런 다음 종이에 동그란 구멍을 뚫고 연살을 종이 위에 붙인다. 마지막 단계로 끈을 묶으면 연이 완성된다.
연이 제대로 만들어졌는지 확인하는 유일한 방법은 연을 날려보는 것이다. 노련한 전문가도 바람 없이는 연을 날릴 수 없다. 그렇기 때문에 일기 예보를 확인하고 바람이 적절한 날을 골라야 한다..
