Reasons for Drinking Coffee

My parents drink a cup of Joe every day. But I can't figure out why they enjoy such a bitter drink. I would like to try it for myself, but my mom says I can't because of the caffeine content. So, I gave some thought to why grown-ups drink coffee.

First, they drink coffee because of its distinctive aroma. I also enjoy the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Second, I think some people drink coffee just because it's what everyone is doing. I also think people keep going back to coffee because it's addictive. My mom says she started drinking java long after she became an adult. Third, people drink coffee to wake themselves up. Most adults reach for coffee in the morning when they get out of bed, saying they need a pick-me-up. I think that effect is down to the caffeine in coffee.

distinctive - making something as clearly different from others

pick-me-up - something, often food or drink, that gives you more energy or makes you feel better

be down to sb/sth - to be result of one person's actions or one particular thing

fly the ointment - something that spoils a situation that could have been pleasant
