I took my kids to Okinawa, Japan, for a summer vacation last year. Although a typhoon was in the weather forecast, we didn’t pay much attention since it was expected to miss our area.
We enjoyed sunny weather and had a wonderful trip. But we later heard from locals that Typhoon Khanun had changed its course and was picking up speed.
It wasn’t until our flight was canceled and nearby facilities shut down that we realized the seriousness of the situation. We were confined to our hotel. Posts on travel forums contained grim news of power outages, water shortages, and road closures
After spending two extra nights in Okinawa, our family of four was finally able to return home on a temporary flight.
pick up speed - to begin to have more speed/momentum
confine - to keep someone or something within limits
grim - extremely bad, worrying, or without hope
get stranded - to be unable to leave a place due to a problem, such as lack of transportation or money
작년 여름 아이들을 데리고 일본 오키나와로 휴가를 갔다. 일기 예보에 태풍이 온다고 했지만 우리 지역에는 영향을 미치지 않을 것으로 예상했기 때문에 크게 신경 쓰지 않았다.
우리는 화창한 날씨를 만끽하며 멋진 여행을 즐겼다. 그러던 중, 현지인들로부터 태풍 ‘카눈’의 경로가 바뀌고 속도 또한 빨라졌다는 소식을 들었다.
항공편이 취소되고 인근 시설이 모두 폐쇄된 후에야 사태의 심각성을 깨달았다. 우리는 호텔에 갇혀 있었다. 여행 커뮤니티에는 정전, 단수, 도로 폐쇄 등 암울한 소식이 올라왔다.
오키나와에서 이틀 밤을 더 보낸 후, 우리 네 식구는 임시 항공편을 통해 마침내 귀국할 수 있었다.
