Living Without a Car

I have a driver's license, but I can't drive a car because I'm as blind as a bat. I'm especially scared of driving at night, because I can't see a thing. Ever since my husband had a near miss in the car a while ago, it's been gathering dust in the parking lot.

So, whenever the two of us go anywhere, we go on foot. We use public tranport like buses, trains, and taxis when we travel. And when we visit a large supermarket, we can't buy in bulk.

To be honest, having to walk everywhere can be a hassle. Our legs often hurt and we have to go searching around for bus stops. But not having to drive is both convenient and safe. Plus, all that walking means we get plenty of exercise. Even so, we can't walk everywhere forever, especially as we get on in years. That's why we can't wait for the time when self-driving cars finally become widespread.

  • I bought a guitar last year, but it is gathering dust. / It's shame that it is gathering dusk like that.
  • I usually go on foot for the exercise. / If you go on foot, it will take about fifteen mimutes.
  • It was late, so we had to go searching around for an open shop. / I want to be sure before I go searching around.

1: Do you get behind wheel often?

2: I've rarely driven, ever since my eyesight took a downturn.

1: Oh, really?

2: Yes. I'm especially scared of driving at night, because I can't make out the lane markers.

1: I suppose you could feel that way.

2: So, I usually take public transportation, and I travel on foot if it's a walkable distance.
