I felt a pain in my left jaw while I was eating a while back. I tried chewing on the other side, but the pain persisted in my left jaw. When I tried to open my mouth, my left jaw wouldn’t open properly.
I went to the hospital, got a dental X-ray, and consulted with a doctor. The doctor explained that my jaw was too tense. I have a habit of unconsciously clenching my teeth and the doctor said that it was causing tension in my jaw. The doctor advised me to consciously practice keeping my upper and lower molars apart. I also received physical therapy for my left jaw and was prescribed painkillers before leaving the hospital.
I used to think everyone had a habit of clenching their teeth like I did. I was surprised to learn that most people don’t. It made me realize how important it is to develop good habits.
a while back - a time in the past that is not specified; a while ago
clench teeth - to squeeze your teeth together firmly, often due to anger or upset
