Lifestyle Diseases

Lifestyle diseases refer to chronic conditions caused by daily habits such as an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, smoking, excessive drinking, and stress.

Frequently eating salty and high-calorie foods can lead to conditions like hypertension and high cholesterol. Excessive stress, smoking, and irregular lifestyle habits can also cause cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases.

However, these habits can be changed by adopting a positive mindset and strengthening one’s will. In other words, it’s important to manage daily habits since lifestyle diseases are preventable.

I spend a lot of time seated at work, so I don’t get enough exercise. Also, I enjoy flour-based foods, which is another unhealthy habit. I need to make an effort to adopt a healthier lifestyle starting today.

cardiovascular - relating to the heart and blood vessels (= tubes that carry blood around the body)
cerebrovascular - relating to the blood vessels, especially the arteries, that supply the brain
have it looked at - to arrange for someone to examine or inspect something
posture - a position of the body, or the way in which someone holds the body when standing, sitting, or walking

  • It’s hard to adopt a positive mindset in a situation like this. / I try to adopt a positive mindset even when things go wrong.
  • Many office workers don’t get enough exercise. / I gained a lot of weight because I didn’t get enough exercise.
  • I tried to adopt a healthier lifestyle after my son was born. / It’s not easy to adopt a healthier lifestyle all at once.

A: My shoulder has been bothering me every time I move it lately.

B: Isn’t that a symptom of frozen shoulder?

A: Yeah, I think so. I should have it looked at.

B: Do you exercise regularly?

A: Yes, I exercise often, but I think I might have bad posture when I am seated.

B: Age might be a factor, too. We’re at an age where our bodies start to break down.
