Sugar Addiction and Children’s Health

Food has a powerful impact on our body and mind. Eating good food and cultivating a healthy diet is especially crucial for children.

The term “sugar addiction” has recently gained a lot of attention. When we are tired or feeling down, eating sweets can bring a sense of recovery from fatigue or a bad mood. Bur people who have developed an addiction to sugar from overconsumption continue to eat sweets incessantly. Often, they don’t even realize they are doing it. When they are low on sugar, they quickly become irritable and sensitive, akin to withdrawal symptoms. Chronic excessive sugar consumption can also lead to chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol.

I fully understand why adults give children their favorite snacks and candies. But it’s important to remember that going overboard with such snacks can have adverse effects on children’s dental health, tastes, cognition, and emotions.

 

cultivate - to create a new condition by directed effort

irritable - becoming annoyed or angry very easily

withdrawal - the physical and mental effects experienced when a person stops using a drug

go overboard - to do something too much, or to be too excited or eager about something

intake - the amount of a particular substance that is eaten or drunk during a particular time

 

음식이 우리 몸과 마음에 미치는 영향력은 강력하다. 좋은 음식을 먹고 건강한 식습관을 기르는 것은 특히 어린이에게 중요하다. 

최근 '설탕 중독'이라는 용어가 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 우리는 피곤하거나 기분이 우울할 때 단 음식을 먹으면 피로가 회복되거나 기분이 좋아질 수 있다. 하지만 과다 섭취로 인해 설탕 중독에 빠진 사람들은 끊임없이 단 것을 먹는다. 종종 그들은 자신이 그렇게 하고 있다는 사실조차 인지하지 못한다. 당이 부족하면 금단 증상과 비슷하게 급격히 짜증 내고 예민해진다. 또한 만성적인 당 과다 섭취는 고혈압, 당뇨병, 비만, 고지혈증과 같은 만성 질환으로 이어질 수 있다. 

어른들이 아이들에게 좋아하는 간식과 사탕을 주는 이유를 충분히 이해한다. 하지만 이러한 간식이 지나칠 경우 아이들의 치아 건강, 입맛, 인지 및 정서에 악영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점을 기억하는 것이 중요하다.

A: They are crazy about things like chocolate and ice cream.

B: Those foods can lead to weight gain and be unhealthy if you eat too much.

A: Yes. I recently learned about the symptoms of sugar addiction, so I’m even more concerned.

B: It might be a good idea to gradually reduce their intake.
