Since 2009, Korean reading skills in our country have taken a sharp downturn. This happens to coincide with the point when smartphones became widespread.

Nowadays, many people have a hard time reading texts longer than about three lines. As a result, most news articles are produced in a card format. As people scroll through text, they often scroll more quickly than they can read. Plus, they can stop reading at any point just by clicking the 'back' button. Younger kids these days more accustomed to finding YouTube videos than to getting information via text.

But our brains have the ability to recover and can always bounce back. If you find it difficult to read with your eyes, reading out loud can be very helpful.

 

  • Her grades took a sharp downturn last semester. / Sales took a sharp downturn because of the news.
  • Getting information via text is still relevant today. / Compared to watching videos, getting information via text can be more efficient.
  • I read out loud with my son every night. / I study alone becausee I like to read out loud.

1: I'm having difficulty reading long texts these days.

2: I feel the same way.

1: I think it's because I've gotten used to viewing images or videos.

2: We need to make it a habit to deliberately read long texts to the very end.
