Going Back to Normal

I have recently started posing a difficult question to myself. "Am I really taking charge of my own life?" I have been in the travel industry for a long time. Like many other businesses that took a direct hit from the coronavirus crisis, we were barely scraping by in these difficult times.

When flight routes began to open up again as vaccination rates rose all over the world, I dared to dream that we would be able to get back to work. But the coronavirus is again taking over our lives in more diverse and powerful ways with the Omicron variant. Thinking about what other viruses may appear next has me on tenterhooks. Sometimes, I even get to thinking that viruses may be the true owners of our planet Earth.

tenterhooks - worried or nervous about something that is going to happen

  • Someone has to take charge of the situation. / I decided to take charge of the project myself.
  • The company was barely scraping by last year. / Our family was barely scraping by during tha crisis.
  • After lunch, we soon got back to work. / I took a year off after having my baby, but then I got back to work.

1: You are in the travel industry, aren't you?

2: Yes, that's right. The coronavirus has been hard on us these past two years.

1: Oh, I can imagine.

2: Whenever it seems like things are looking up, a new virus variant appears.

1: That's right.

2: I can only hope that we'll turn the corner soon.
