Fireflies spend about a year in the water as larvae, before transforming into pupae. After that, they live as adults for about two weeks. Despite the long wait for adulthood, their actual lifespan as adults is over in a flash.
Recently, I went on a trip to experience fireflies with my child. It was a hands-on event where you could see over 30,000 fireflies. The time we spent gazing at the tiny lights moving in the pitch darkness was very peaceful. The sparkling lights and the sound of insects buzzing on a summer night became an unforgettable moment for children and grown-ups alike.
At the end of the event, we each made a wish as we released newly transformed adult fireflies into the wild. The beautiful light they emitted as they flew away all at once was a sight to behold.

반딧불이는 애벌레로 물속에서 약 1년을 보낸 후 번데기로 변태 한다. 그 후 약 2주 동안 성체로 생활한다. 긴 세월 기다려 성체가 되지만, 실제 성체로 살아가는 기간은 매우 짧다.
얼마 전 아이와 함께 반딧불이 체험을 다녀왔다. 3만 마리가 넘는 반딧불이를 볼 수 있는 체험 행사였다. 깜깜한 어둠 속에서 움직이는 작은 불빛을 바라보는 시간은 정말 평화로웠다. 여름밤의 반짝이는 불빛과 윙윙거리는 곤충 소리는 아이와 어른 모두에게 잊을 수 없는 순간이었다.
행사 마지막에는 이제 막 성체가 된 반딧불이를 야생으로 풀어주면서 각자 소원을 빌었다. 반딧불이가 한꺼번에 날아가면서 발산하는 아름다운 빛은 장관을 이루었다.
